Below is an article published in the Minot Daily News written by a local county official of Minot, North Dakota.
Up here in the northern part of North Dakota, we just recovered from a historic event --- maybe I should say a "weather event of biblical proportions" --- with a historic and record-breaking blizzard which dumped up to 25 feet of snow and accompanied by winds of up to more than 50 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed all roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to tens of thousands.
For your information, we have learned to not expect the federal government to come to our aid. Sure enough, Obama did not come. FEMA did absolutely nothing. Yet no one "howled" or blamed the government for doing nothing to help. No expletive was uttered on television. Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit. Our mayor did not blame Obama or anyone else. Our governor did not blame Obama or anyone else either. Neither CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX nor NBC visited - or even reported about the Category 5 snowstorm which battered us.
Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards. No one asked for a FEMA trailer house. No one looted.

Nobody demanded that the government do something. Nobody expected the government to do anything either. There was not a word from Larry King, Bill O'Reilly, Oprah Winfrey, Chris Mathews, Geraldo Rivera, Shaun Penn, Barbara Streisand, Brad Pitt, and not one Hollywood type of any kind came around.
No, we just melted the snow for water; sent out caravans of SUVs to pluck people out of snow-engulfed cars. Truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks without asking for a penny for their trouble. Local restaurants made food, and the local police and fire departments delivered it to the snow-bound families. Families took in stranded people - total strangers.
We fired up our wood stoves, broke out our coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns. We put on extra layers of clothes because up here it is "work or die". We did not wait for some Affirmative Action government to get us out of a mess. No relied on some welfare program that trades votes for 'sitting-at-home' and waiting for welfare checks.
While a Category 5 blizzard is unusual (even in this part of "heavy snow country"), yet we knew that it could happen, so we made plans on how to deal with it ourselves when it happened. And indeed it did happen!
Hopefully, people will get the message that the world does not owe them or anyone else a living.
