Because of today's "new morality" --- ['thanks' to the ACLU and the atheists among us], the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the offering of prayer in public, especially in public schools, are now outlawed.
Below is a poem patterned after the famous childhood prayer "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep", which expresses someone's feelings about the "new morality" and the ban on God and religion in public schools.
<><><>*<><><>
Now I sit me down in school
Where prayer is now against the rule
For this great nation once under God
Has chosen God and Christ to be outlawed.
If Scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And if my head in prayer I bow
I'm told I violate a federal law now.
My hair can be purple, orange, or green,
It's no offense; now 'tis a freedom seen.
But the law is specific and quite precise.
Prayers spoken aloud come with a price.
Since praying in any public hall
Might offend a faithless, godless soul
So, in silence I must meditate,
Since God is not allowed in my own State.
Yet I'm allowed to cuss and dress like a freak,
To pierce my nose, my tongue, and cheek.
But if I do ever cite from the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.
The school can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the unwed daddy as its Senior King.
But incorrect to teach what's right from wrong,
Because such judgments do not belong.
We're free to get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires, and totem poles.
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
And not a word 'bout God must reach the crowd.
It's gotten scary here, I must confess,
Things have gone chaotic, the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot, My soul please take!
