Life may not be what we exactly hoped for, but while we have it, we might as well have a blast.
Too many people put off something that brings them joy for whatever reason; perhaps, it is just because they are too afraid or too rigid to depart from their long-time routine. Consider how many people on the Titanic passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night.
And consider. . .
- how many folks who eat at home simply because no one in the family suggested going out to dinner for a change, but instead insisted on thawing some frozen meat in the freezer;
- how many kids who drop in to talk but who just sit in silence because the adults/parents are so wrapped up in watching their favorite TV show, but in the process simply ignore the child.
Also, think of the instances when some friends or relative calls and asks, “How about going to lunch with me?” only to be turned down by some lame alibi such as:
"I’m too busy – I have no time”;
- “I’m doing the laundry”;
- “I have not shampooed my hair”;
- “I had a late breakfast”; …or…
- “It looks like it is going to rain"
and the lunch invitation is never fulfilled because suddenly either the called or the caller dies unexpectedly?
Additionally, many people cram so much triviality into their daily life, they even tend to schedule their headaches.
And there are folks who promise that they will…
- go and visit Grandma & Grandpa when Steve is toilet-trained;
- entertain when the living room carpet is replaced;
- take a trip/vacation – [go on a second honeymoon] -- when the kids graduate from college…
- but never get to fulfill their dream or intention. As someone once said: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”
Life has a way of accelerating as one gets older. And while the days get shorter, the list of intentions and promises “to do things” gets longer. Many awaken each day with a litany of:
- "I'm going to…";
- "I plan to…";
- "Someday, when things settle down a bit, I shall…"
The truth is, the world needs more 'seize-the-moment' persons, who are open to adventure and available for some fun activity or trip, who keep an open mind to new ideas, whose enthusiasm for life is contagious.
It is a delight to have a friend or relative, who, in the spur of a moment, is ready to trade bad feet for a pair of roller blades or set aside a boring household chore for a roller coaster ride. Unfortunately, such friend or relative is a rarity.
For a change, give yourself a real treat and have a nice day. Do something spontaneous and break the boring daily routine because you want to, not because it is something on your “should-do” list.
Additionally, consider the following. . .what if you knew that it’s your final day on Earth and are allowed to make only one phone call. . .
- who would you call?
- what would you say?
- And since you are still here and have the chance. . .
- why are you still dilly-dallying to make that call?
Finally, ponder the following:
Have you ever watched kids enjoy riding a merry-go-round?
Have you ever listened to the rain’s pitter-patter on the ground?
Have you ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Have you ever gazed as the sun sets -- fading into night?
Do you usually run in a hurry through each day?
When asked, "How are you?" really mean what you say?
When the day is done, do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores running through your head?
Have you ever told a child, "We'll do it tomorrow,"
But never bothered to note his let-down or her sorrow?
Have you ever lost touch with family or friend?
Have you ever let a good friendship end?
Have you ever called an old pal just to say "hello"?
Do your daily worry and constant hurry blatantly show?
Do your friends and kin know you truly care?
Do you with others your time freely share?
Life is the most precious, priceless present,
From God -- to you it’s been lovingly lent.
So dare never to fritter it away, misuse or waste,
But cherish and savor it fully without any haste!
