The Five-Step Journey ...

by Pastor Bobby Schuller

"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." -Psalm 119:105

I remember living in Oklahoma where, in the winter, it would get to 5 degrees with wind blowing 30 miles an hour. Tulsa is the only city I know of that has more wind than Chicago does. I remember going out in the cold at six in the morning, trying to scrape ice off the car windows, knuckles hitting the ice, and then falling to my knees in pain. I'd think, "I'm from California! I don't belong here!"

When you travel to - or arrive in - a new place, sometimes the experience is tough. Nevertheless, there are steps you can take on your journey that will help with the new challenges and new life experiences you'll encounter.

During our recent Christmas celebration, we focused on a journey - Advent - a word that means the arrival or the coming. Of the five words that we focus on during this time each year, the first is hope. Hope becomes peace. Peace becomes joy. And joy becomes love. Then, on Christmas Eve, we light the Christ candle because when you become a person who loves, you become like Christ. You become someone who knows God. Now, that's a journey worth taking - from hope, to peace, to joy, to love, to becoming like Christ!

Prayer: Dear, awesome Lord, I am with you on this journey. As I follow you, I feel hope, peace, joy, and love, and I become each day more like you. What a blessing that is! Amen.

Reflection: How have you traveled through this life with God? How have you experienced hope, peace, joy, love, and transformation through Christ?
