A Cross Helped A Carpenter Build His Faith

Jerry Curkendall's beef with Jesus began when the savior invaded his life.

"I was jealous of Jesus," he said. "He was coming into my house and taking over my family, and I didn't like it."

To his dismay, his wife Elaine Curkendall, refused to let Jesus go and told him so.

"If you are asking me to choose between you and Jesus, then I'm choosing God," she said. "You ain't even a close second."

In that speechless moment, Curkendall had an epiphany.

"I said to myself, 'This stuff is for real.'"

That was in 1989 or the early 90s. By 1993, Curkendall had not only accepted Jesus, but had become known on the Grand Strand for his portrayal of the Jewish carpenter in "The Crucifixion" drama. Each Holy Saturday from 1993 to 1997 he hung on a cross for two hours in a display that blessed some and bothered others.

"I didn't realize what kind of impact it had on people, and I didn't understand what it was doing to me," Curkendall said.

He does know this: What Jesus did was an act of love unparalleled.

"The greatest moment of my life is when I gave my life to Christ," Curkendall said. "Without him, I have nothing to look forward to." -Read more at Sun News
