A grandmother took her grandchildren for a treat at a restaurant. Her six-year-old grandson asked if he could say "grace" before the meal. As the grandmother and her grandchildren bowed their heads, the little boy intoned loud enough for other customers nearby to hear, "God is great. God is good. Thank you, God, for our food, and I would even thank You more if Nana gets me ice cream for dessert...and liberty and justice for all! Amen!"
There was laughter from the folks who heard the prayer. But a woman at another table loudly commented, "That's what's wrong with this country today. Kids are not taught how to properly pray. Asking God for ice cream... why...I never!
Upon hearing the woman's comment, the little boy burst into tears and asked his grandmother, "Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?"
The grandmother hugged and held the little boy close to her and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and that certainly, God was not mad at him.
Then, an elderly gentleman approached their table, winked at the little boy, and said, "I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer!"
"Really?" the little boy asked.
"Cross my heart!" the old man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added [as he tried to "secretly point" towards the direction of the woman who started the whole thing], "Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes."
And of course, the grandmother bought ice cream for each of the grandchildren at the end of the meal. The little boy stared at his for a moment, and then he did something quite unexpected and unforgettable. He picked up his sundae and without a word, he walked over to the offending woman's table and placed it in front of the woman, and with a big smile, he told her, "Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes....my soul is good already."
A thunder of prolonged applause erupted in the restaurant...and many diners came up to the little six-year-old and commented that he did very well, and they will never forget his prayer and good deed that day! And to cap it all, the restaurant manager brought the little boy a fresh d ish of ice cream---with compliments of the restaurant!
