Poll: Churchgoers Still Oppose Same-Sex 'Marriage'
A recent Pew Research poll shows that the public is roughly divided evenly on the issue of same-sex "marriage" -- even among Christians.
According to the research, churchgoing America is still against homosexual "marriage," while non-churchgoers are more in favor of it. White evangelicals and black Christians are the strongest opponents.
Mark Tooley of The Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD) takes a closer look at the breakdown.
"The poll indicates that Catholics and mainline Protestants are evenly divided or leaning toward same-sex marriage. Although I strongly suspect if those numbers are broken down further it would show that the actively churchgoing mainline Protestants and churchgoing Catholics are more inclined to oppose same-sex marriage," he offers.
Mark Tooley (IRD)The Pew poll also shows that about 57 percent of Hispanic Catholics support same-gender unions.
"However, again, I strongly suspect if you broke that poll down among actively churchgoing Hispanic Catholics that that would indicate most are opposed to same-sex marriage," Tooley notes. "And I strongly suspect that evangelical Hispanics would be shown to be fairly strongly against same-sex marriage."
The IRD president points out that the latter is a fast-growing group, as roughly 25-30 percent of Hispanics in the United States are evangelical.
As for those identifying with political parties, 65 percent of Democrats support same-gender marriage, compared to 24 percent of Republicans. –By Charlie Butts/OneNewsNow/August 2, 2012

DOJ to Colorado Family: Give Up Your Religion or Your Business
The Justice Department last week presented the Newland family of Colorado–who own Hercules Industries, a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning business–with what amounted to an ultimatum: Give up your religion or your business.
“Hercules Industries has ‘made no showing of a religious belief which requires that [it] engage in the [HVAC] business,” the Justice Department said in a formal filing in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado.
In response to the Justice Department’s argument that the Newlands can either give up practicing their religion or give up owning their business, the Alliance Defending Freedom, which is representing the family, said in a reply brief: “[T]o the extent the government is arguing that its mandate does not really burden the Newlands because they are free to abandon their jobs, their livelihoods, and their property so that others can take over Hercules and comply, this expulsion from business would be an extreme form of government burden.” -Vision To America

West Tennessee Pastor Arrested In California
A West Tennessee pastor is jailed in California charged with defying a court order.
According to the U.S. Marshal Service, Walter "Chick" McGill, 66, was arrested at the Loma Linda Seventh Day Adventist Church, Friday.
The arrest comes amid a court battle over the name of McGill's Creation Seventh Day Adventist Church in Guys, Tennessee.
The Seventh Day Adventist Church took the Creation Seventh Day Adventist Church and accused the West Tennessee church of infringing on their trademark. A federal court judge ordered the Creation Seventh Day Adventist Church to remove the "Seventh Day Adventist" from it's name, but McGill refused.
In April, Pastor McGill told 7 Eyewitness News, "We would really like to comply to the court orders. We respect the courts, we respect the law. But in this case the law is violating our consciences and we must put our consciences before the law."
He also said he planned to fast if he was imprisoned. -WBBJ Ch7
