A Texas Beer Joint Sues A Church

When Drummond's Bar in Mt. Vernon, Texas announced that it will start an expansion project in order to increase business and accommodate more patrons, the nearby Baptist church petitioned to block the construction and started a prayer campaign that the Lord will intervene and not let the project go through.

Despite the Baptists' petition and prayer campaign, the construction began and progressed well all the way to completion. However, the week before the bar's grand reopening, lightning struck the bar and it burned to the ground.

After the bar's destruction, the church rejoiced and bragged about "the power of prayer". But soon after, the bar owner sued the church on the grounds that the church was ultimately responsible for the destruction of his building through the congregation's direct and indirect actions.

In its reply to the court, the church vehemently denied any connection and/or responsibility for the building's being struck by lightning and ultimately burning down.

After the judge read through the plaintiff's complaint and the defendants' reply, he commented at the start of the court hearing: "I don't know how I'm going to rule on this case since it appears from the paperwork that we have a bar owner who believes in the power of prayer and an entire Baptist congregation that now does not."
