Clouds have to be cirrus, at least 20.000 feet in the air, with just the right amount of ice crystals and the sun has to hit the clouds at precisely 58 degrees.

A personal note. I have seen these lights, well, not the exact ones, but I have seen similar light shows when in Alaska. I’ve also been there when the sun never sets. And the most amazing is at night when the stars glitter the night sky. If ever want to see the heaven’s, Alaska’s the place.
